Welcome to Amy Barry Photography!

This website is designed to give you a sneak peek into my most recent weddings and sessions. It is also to show you all a little taste of who I am so you can get to know the face behind the name.

I love photography, but even more I love photographing couples in love. Weddings are the most special moments in the lives of so many. I feel honored to capture these moments for a couple to look back on for years to come. I take pride in documenting the details of each wedding. Most weddings are similar, but it's the special details that make it your own. So take some time to look around, and leave a comment so I know who is stopping by!

My new best friend!

Today I received my new macro lens!!!! I have been waiting so long to get this lens and I told the deliveryman today that he was my hero. I hope I made his day as wonderful as he made mine. I had come home from school for a short break just in case the lens came... perfect timing! I had just enough time to snap a quick photo, load it on my computer, and upload it to Facebook before I had to go back to school. This lens is amazing. The macro capabilities amaze me. I had never even rented a macro lens (which I usually do before I buy lenses) which was a little bit of a risk. I knew that I would fall in love with it instantly... how could I not??? I can't wait to do more ring shots with this... I will make them look HUGE! Here is the lens itself:

Here is the first photo I took with this lens... this is at an aperture of 9!!!!  I know to many of you that may not mean anything but if there are any photographers out there, think about it.  I was about 2 inches away from the ring itself, just think about what it would have looked like at 2.8 (which it is capable of).  BOOM my awesome wedding ring is in your face!

I got too impatient waiting for bugs so I settled for a leaf.

We have a cork collection from all of Derek's wine.

Ok, this blog is about to get personal.  Very few people know this little fact about me, and I'm going to share it with you all.  None of you will ever look at me the same, brace yourself.  My eyes are uneven.  Yeah, really uneven.  No, I see just fine.  Yes, sometimes I can slightly see over the left lens of my glasses.  My left eye is higher than my right and my left foot is longer than my right.  Correlation?  Maybe.  Either way, don't be alarmed.  I can see you just fine.  My photos aren't crooked, I only use one eye when focusing. Now that I have calmed you all down, I will share this photo.  I think it is so cool because you can see such detail from the reflection of my eyes showing the detail of this lens.  Anyway, here goes nothin'

Thanks for stopping by!  There will be many more macro posts when I can build up the patience to watch for bugs smile

Anjini Newborn Photos

As most of you can recall, I posted a maternity session earlier this month with Urmi and her family. Well, she safely delivered her first daughter, Anjini! She is a sweet and tiny little baby. I could not get over how small she was! She fit perfectly into all of our little baskets and props smile I'm so excited for the Subramanian family to finally have their baby girl to cuddle and snuggle with. She is an absolute doll, and she'll be a heartbreaker when she grows up. Watch out boys!

This photo cracks me up!  She poked her tongue out at the right time!

I love this photo too, she is already so pensive.

"This modeling thing is tough!"

This little onsie was included in Urmi's maternity photos so we wanted to incorporate it into Anjini's photos.  We tried to adjust it to show the text and Anjini wasn't happy about it.

Manaav LOVES being a big brother.  He told me about a hundred times "This is my baby sister!"

Gokul's parents stopped by for a quick photo with their new grand-baby.

Thank you so much to the Subramanian family for all your love and support.  Most of all, congratulations on your new baby girl... enjoy every moment!

To look, or not to look.  That is the question.

This post is for all of you upcoming brides. I would hate to say that this is a trend, but it may be. More and more couples are choosing to see each other before their ceremony. MANY of you may ask the most important question... why? What could be the benefits of breaking a time honored tradition in weddings? I will tell you straight forward I am captain of Team First Look. I love the way that the photos turn out and more importantly, the private moment between the bride and groom. So to get back to the question... why? Some photographer's first reason is time. My first and main reason is emotion. Plain and simple. You and your fiance will have so many emotions running through yourself on that day. My husband and I did a first look before our ceremony and he waited for me in our chapel on the alter with the photographers in the room. The photographers were able to get his anticipation as well as mine, and when I walked through the double doors, they were able to capture both of our emotions. Our RAW emotions. We didn't feel as if we had to pretend or hide our emotions because it was just us. Our photographers were completely respectful of our space and time, and even un-noticed. Once we saw each other they snapped a few more photos of our embraces and quietly slipped out of the room to let us have our moment with each other. I wouldn't trade those images for anything. They are probably the most emotional images to me because that moment was so special. Yes, a photographer can snap a photo of a groom seeing his bride for the first time walking down the isle with her father. If that is what a couple wants, that is perfect for them. I have never tried to persuade anyone into doing a first look, I've only suggested.  You may wonder, what about the emotion from the ceremony?  Let's be honest, the bride can be walking down that isle in jeans and a t-shirt but everyone still realizes the importance of that moment.  The groom will find her more beautiful than ever even if he has seen her 1,000 times before just because of the moment that is happening.  Trust me.

There is also the benefit of time. If a bride and groom are willing to see each other before a ceremony, there is more time for photos of the couple, bridal party, and family. There are more opportunities to get the family portraits before the ceremony so the couple and family can get to the reception a little quicker. I don't think this should be the one and only reason a couple decides to do a first look, but it is a perk.

Here are a few of our photos from our first look:

Yes, he waved.

Ok, so I'm NOT a pretty crier.  Every time I see this photo I remember the moment like it was yesterday.  The emotion is so raw and tangible, I love it.

I wouldn't trade this image for anything.

Thank you so much (again) to Lauren Clark Photography for these wonderful images.  I hope this gives all of you brides out there something to think about!  Make sure to discuss this option with your photographer, whomever they may be.  Most importantly, have fun!!!

Be Inspired

Lately I have been contemplating my blog and deciding if it should be my business only or business and personal blog. Obviously this blog is mainly for my photography, but what would my photography be without my personality? Part of what sells a photographer to their clients is the way they present themselves and form relationships with people. I would like to think that my clients feel comfortable in front of my lens because I make them feel that way. Rarely do I ever get clients who are born-to-be-models and are super comfortable from the get go. I love to get that crazy side of my clients; the side that others rarely get to see. So, needless to say I’ve decided to post a little more personal blogs on here and I hope you all don’t get too bored.

My first real personal post is also business related. I am always trying to find new forums, networking events, workshops (Love Affair!), and anything new to help myself grow as a photographer and business owner. A couple of people had told me about this event called CreativeLIVE with Chase Jarvis and Jasmine Star. It is a 4 day event that is broadcast online. Jasmine Star, who is beyond talented, is allowing a camera crew to follow her during a wedding to demonstrate her shooting and personal style on the day of. She is also showing photographers how she prepares and finishes a full wedding. I have been watching a couple hours of this broadcast and I’m already inspired and motivated to change the way I do some things in my photographs and business. Jasmine has opened herself up to ANY questions and that is very hard to find in successful photographers. Some photographers who “make it big” are not the first to reveal their secrets and tips, but Jasmine does. I find people like her, photographers or not, inspiring. She realizes that she has worked hard for what she has and where she is, and is still willing to help out those who are in the shoes she stood in a few years ago.

There is a quote from her webcast that really stood with me. The quote is, “I was shooting the proverbial t-ball wedding”. Yes, it doesn’t make sense now so let me explain. There is a story about a man who would give anything to photograph the World Series. The only problem is, he couldn’t get noticed enough to get to there. He was stuck shooting t-ball games. After a long time of shooting t-ball games for exactly what they are, he realized that to get to the big leagues you have to play ball as if you are already there. So, finally, he began to photograph these small kids playing t-ball as if he were photographing the world’s greatest baseball players in the World Series. Suddenly, the big leagues were noticing his work, and he got to shoot the World Series. The moral of this story for wedding photography is to photograph each wedding as if were the most influential celebrity and designed by the world’s best designers. Jasmine’s story was about a wedding she photographed in a dark, unflattering church. She realized that just because the church itself was not the prettiest to look at, the photos didn’t have to be. Something in her switched and she began to photograph that ceremony as if it were in the most luxurious church in the whole world. The photos stopped traffic because instead of concentrating on the look of the church, she concentrated on the emotion of the couple. I think this is something extremely important in photography, and especially wedding photography. The day and photographs are not about how pretty the church and reception are. The day is about the emotional connection between the two individuals committing themselves to one another. All wedding photographers need to photograph each wedding without regard to the aesthetic properties of the surroundings.

I’m so excited for this new beginning in my business, and in my life. I’m attending an incredible workshop in three weeks called the Love Affair Workshop, and I cannot be more excited. Then it’s off to Santa Fe to photograph a dear friends wedding, and right back home for more wedding excitement! The next month is going to be crazy, exciting, tough, stressful, but most of all I know I will learn so many new things. Can’t wait and I’ll be sure to keep you all updated J

After Yes featuring The Snack Box

By: Amy on August 24th, 20100 comments. View Comments

Last night, I attended a networking event hosted by Elizabeth Gonzalez from After Yes. She was super sweet and I can tell that all of her brides must love her! At this event were the owners of The Snack Box. This is a GENIUS idea! They set up a stand at your reception and serve freshly made mini donuts! These little donuts were delicious with all kinds of sauces and toppings. They also provide candy apples, funnel cakes, fried candy bars, and more. This would definitely bring a unique touch to your wedding reception if you are looking for something different. Make sure to check out After Yes if you are in need of a wedding planner because Elizabeth is detail oriented and a joy to be around.

I hope all of you are having a great week!
